Two problems where this collaboration has been especially fruitful are described below.
Problem 1: Health and treatment outcomes in medicine
Doctors have increasingly recognised the truth behind the idea that a healthy body requires a healthy mind. A large number of hospitals now employ psychologists directly, because psychological factors turn out to matter for genuinely medical outcomes: psychologists help prevent patients from engaging in health-hazardous behaviours, support patients in actually following the treatment regimen a doctor prescribes, and provide psychological counselling to patients dealing with cancer, AIDS, physical disability, intensive care, or the period of post-operative recovery. A physically successful treatment can still fail a patient if their psychological well-being is ignored, which is exactly the gap this collaboration between medicine and psychology fills.
