Both a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist study the causes, treatment, and prevention of psychological disorders, but they differ in their professional training and, as a result, in what they are legally and professionally qualified to do. A clinical psychologist holds a degree in psychology, which includes intensive, specialised training in treating people with psychological disorders. A psychiatrist, by contrast, holds a medical degree, together with years of specialised training in treating psychological disorders. Because a psychiatrist is trained as a medical doctor, one important distinction follows directly: a psychiatrist can prescribe medication and administer treatments such as electroshock therapy, while a clinical psychologist, whose training is not medical, cannot do either of these things.
