It might seem, given how thoroughly the cultural setting a person is born into shapes their personality, values and behaviour, that socialisation must simply restrict individual freedom -- that a person is, in effect, moulded by forces outside their control and left with little genuine choice of their own. On closer examination, this conclusion does not hold up, and two connected points explain why.

First, in actual practice, socialisation never produces complete conformity, because a person is shaped by multiple agencies at once -- family, school, peer group, mass media -- and these agencies frequently pull in different directions rather than delivering one single, consistent message. What a child learns at home may not match what the peer group treats as normal; what a school implicitly teaches through its hidden curriculum may sit uneasily against family expectations. These conflicts between socialising agencies are not incidental noise; they open up real room for a person to weigh competing expectations against one another rather than simply absorbing an uncontested version of how to behave. …
