This is not to say family, school and peer groups have stopped mattering; they clearly still shape early norms, values and roles in the ways this chapter describes. But the chapter's own evidence about media's reach -- a British study found children spend roughly a hundred school days' worth of time a year watching television alone, media reaches households and diaspora audiences continents away, and digital media is expanding especially fast in urban India -- points to just how large a share of a young person's cognitive and normative learning today happens through screens, often independently of what family or school are directly teaching. …
