The Indira Gandhi Canal’s major benefit in its command area is the transformation of both the ecology and the economy of the region.

The Indira Gandhi Canal (formerly known as the Rajasthan Canal) was conceived as a lifeline for the arid and semi-arid districts of western Rajasthan — a region where water scarcity had historically limited human settlement and agricultural activity. The canal draws water from the Harike Barrage on the Sutlej River in Punjab and carries it hundreds of kilometres into the Thar Desert. Its command area covers parts of Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Jodhpur districts.

Before the canal arrived, this vast stretch was characterised by sparse vegetation, low rainfall, and a fragile pastoral economy. People lived a semi-nomadic life, dependent on livestock and whatever meagre crops the scanty rains allowed. The introduction of perennial irrigation through the canal system fundamentally altered this picture.

The most visible change has been ecological. Irrigated agriculture has replaced barren sand dunes with green fields. Crops such as wheat, cotton, mustard, and gram are now grown extensively. Tree plantations along the canal and in the command area have increased vegetation cover, reduced wind erosion, and created a more stable microclimate. This is not a minor or marginal shift — it is a wholesale transformation of the landscape.

Economically, the canal has been equally transformative. Reliable water supply has enabled farmers to adopt high-yielding varieties and multiple cropping cycles. Agricultural productivity has risen sharply, turning previously unproductive land into a source of steady income. Market towns and agro-processing industries have sprung up. Land values have appreciated. The region now contributes significantly to Rajasthan’s food grain and oilseed production. In short, the canal has pulled the area out of subsistence-level existence into a market-oriented agricultural economy. …
