Part (a): Transport cost strongly shapes industrial location — industries settle near raw materials (bulky, weight-losing inputs) or near markets (heavy/perishable outputs) to minimise total transport cost.

Part (b): Dairy farming concentrates near urban and industrial centres because milk is highly perishable and demand there is large, so nearness cuts transport cost and spoilage and gives access to processing.

Part (a)

Industries aim to minimise total cost so as to maximise profit, and transport cost — the cost of assembling raw materials and distributing finished goods — is one of the largest components. This is why transport cost plays such an important role in where an industry locates.

  • Location near raw materials. When raw materials are bulky, heavy or weight-losing (they lose weight during processing), it is cheaper to bring the industry to the material than to carry the material to the market. The iron and steel industry is the classic case: it locates near coalfields and iron-ore deposits — Jamshedpur, Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bokaro — because both coal and ore are heavy and lose much weight when made into steel. Sugar mills locate in the cane-growing tracts of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar because sugarcane is bulky, perishable and loses its sucrose content soon after harvest. Copper smelting and cement (near limestone) behave similarly.
  • Location near the market. When the finished product is heavier, more fragile, perishable or gains bulk during manufacture, industries locate near consumers to cut delivery cost and loss. Bakeries, soft-drink bottling, and heavy or fragile goods illustrate this market pull.
  • Role of transport infrastructure. Well-developed roads, railways and ports reduce movement cost and time, so industries cluster along rail junctions, highways and near ports (petro-chemicals and refineries near coasts) where transport is cheap and reliable. …
