Part (a)
Before 1920, Indian nationalism was largely an elite, urban affair of resolutions and petitions. The Non-Cooperation Movement changed this and became an unprecedented popular movement.
- A pan-Indian alliance. Gandhi fused two grievances — the anger over Jallianwala Bagh and the Rowlatt Act, and Muslim outrage at the treatment of the Ottoman Khilafat after the First World War. The Khilafat–Congress alliance (1920) brought Hindus and Muslims into a single struggle, a rare moment of communal unity.
- A programme everyone could join. Non-cooperation required no wealth or education and no violence: surrender titles, boycott government schools, courts, councils and foreign cloth, and spin khadi. A peasant in Bihar could take part as meaningfully as a Bombay lawyer.
- Mass participation across classes and regions. Students left schools; leaders like C. R. Das and Motilal Nehru gave up their practices; Awadh peasants (Baba Ramchandra) resisted talukdars; Andhra tribals (Alluri Sitaram Raju) defied forest laws; Assam plantation workers struck; and women entered political action for the first time. Foreign-cloth imports fell sharply.
- Non-violence as discipline. The movement was built on ahimsa. When a mob killed policemen at Chauri Chaura (February 1922), Gandhi suspended the whole campaign — proving it was a self-disciplined mass movement, not a riot. …
