Part (a): The colonial government surveyed and mapped India to assess revenue, catalogue exploitable resources, plan military and infrastructure needs, and classify its people — making the country legible and controllable.

Part (b): Taluqdars and sepoys of Awadh joined the 1857 Revolt because the 1856 annexation dispossessed the taluqdars and insulted and impoverished the sepoys, whose religious fears the greased cartridges then inflamed.

Part (a)

For the British, ruling a vast and unfamiliar subcontinent depended on knowing it, so the colonial state invested heavily in regular surveys and mapping.

  • Revenue assessment. Land was the main source of income. Detailed revenue surveys measured and mapped fields, recorded soil types, cropping patterns and the rights of different holders, allowing the government to fix and collect land revenue accurately and to identify defaulters.
  • Military and administrative needs. Accurate topographical maps — the most famous being the Great Trigonometrical Survey — were vital for moving armies, building roads, canals and railways, marking boundaries, and administering districts.
  • Cataloguing resources. Botanical, zoological, geological and forest surveys recorded India's plants, animals, minerals, timber and commercial crops, so that these resources could be developed and exploited for the colonial economy.
  • Knowing the people. Census operations and ethnographic surveys classified the population by caste, religion, tribe and occupation. This made a complex society "legible" and easier to manage, and shaped later policies.
  • Comprehensive surveys. Officials such as Francis Buchanan were commissioned to travel through newly acquired regions and record their geography, resources, economy and customs — reports that guided policy. …
