Part (a): As a social reformer Gandhiji attacked untouchability, promoted khadi and the dignity of labour, worked for Hindu-Muslim unity and women's uplift, and tied social reform to swaraj.

Part (b): In 1905-1907 the partition of Bengal set off the Swadeshi and Boycott movement, spreading self-reliance and cultural nationalism and deepening the Moderate-Extremist split.

Part (a)

Gandhiji held that swaraj meant not merely British departure but the moral and social regeneration of Indian society, so his role as a social reformer was inseparable from his politics.

  • War on untouchability: He denounced untouchability as a curse on Hinduism, coined the term 'Harijan' (children of God) for the depressed classes, insisted on their entry into temples, wells and schools, and practised inter-dining and shared cleaning of latrines in his ashrams. His fast unto death in 1932 against separate electorates led to the Poona Pact, reserving seats for the depressed classes within the general electorate.
  • Dignity of labour and self-reliance: By making khadi, the charkha and village industries central, he attacked the caste prejudice that despised manual work and promoted economic self-sufficiency; he himself did menial tasks to set an example.
  • Hindu-Muslim unity: He regarded communal harmony as essential to swaraj and worked, sometimes at the cost of his popularity and finally his life, to keep Hindus and Muslims together. …
