The Revolt of 1857 was not a single, coordinated war of independence, but a series of uprisings that erupted across northern and central India. Its geography tells us a great deal about its nature. The rebellion was overwhelmingly concentrated in the region of the erstwhile Mughal heartland and the areas of the British Bengal Presidency, especially the Gangetic plain. The major centres — Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Bareilly, and Arrah — all lie in this broad belt.

Delhi was the symbolic heart of the revolt. The sepoys of Meerut marched there and proclaimed the ageing Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar as their leader. This gave the rebellion a political centre and a traditional focus of legitimacy. Jhansi, under the leadership of Rani Lakshmibai, became a powerful symbol of resistance, especially after the British annexed her state under the Doctrine of Lapse. Arrah, in Bihar, was the scene of a famous siege where a small number of British officers and civilians held out against a much larger rebel force led by Kunwar Singh, a local zamindar.
