Historians call the Mahabharata a dynamic text because it had no single author or final fixed form; it was a living tradition that changed over roughly a thousand years (c. 500 BCE–400 CE).
- A text that grew in stages. Tradition itself records three names by size — Jaya (about 8,800 verses), Bharata (about 24,000), and the full Mahabharata (nearly 100,000 verses). Each stage added new material to the same war story.
- Interpolations for changing needs. Long didactic and devotional sections were inserted later — the Bhagavad Gita placed just before the war, the Shanti Parva's discourses on statecraft, and the Harivamsa appendix elevating Krishna. These reflect the rise of Vaishnavism and of Brahmanical ideas of kingship.
- Oral transmission by bards. It was recited by sutas/charioteer-bards, so wording and episodes varied as it passed from generation to generation before being written down.
- Regional recensions. Hundreds of manuscripts from Kashmir to Kerala differ in episodes and emphasis (northern vs southern recensions).
- The Critical Edition as proof. In the twentieth century scholars at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (Pune) collated over a thousand manuscripts and found large numbers of verses present in some but absent in others — direct evidence that the text kept changing. …
