Improving India-Pakistan relations requires addressing the deep-rooted trust deficit through confidence-building measures and sustained dialogue, focusing on people-to-people contacts and economic cooperation.

The relationship between India and Pakistan has been strained since Partition in 1947, marked by wars, territorial disputes (especially over Kashmir), and cross-border terrorism. Ethnic conflict analysis helps us understand this tension: both nations define their national identities partly in opposition to each other—India as a secular, multi-ethnic democracy and Pakistan as a homeland for South Asian Muslims. This zero-sum framing makes reconciliation difficult, but not impossible. The key is to start with small, practical steps that build trust gradually, rather than aiming for a grand settlement immediately.

One effective measure is to expand people-to-people contacts through cultural exchanges, sports diplomacy, and easing visa restrictions. Such interactions humanise the "other" and create domestic constituencies that pressure governments to maintain peace. Even during tense periods, allowing students, artists, and elderly relatives to visit each other's countries keeps channels of communication open.
