Yes, a long-standing pattern of deviant behaviour can be considered abnormal. Two of the standard criteria of abnormality apply:

  • Deviation from social norms. Every society has norms — stated and unstated rules for acceptable behaviour. Behaviour that departs markedly from these norms, especially when the pattern is persistent, is regarded as abnormal. Importantly, this is culturally relative: a society that values competition and assertiveness may regard aggressive behaviour as acceptable, whereas a society that emphasises cooperation and family values may consider the same behaviour unacceptable. So whether deviance is 'abnormal' depends partly on the norms of the given culture.
  • Maladaptiveness (and distress). Behaviour is also judged abnormal when it is maladaptive — when it interferes with the well-being of the individual and the group and hampers the person's ability to function — or when it causes personal distress. …
