  1. Dissociation is a severance of the links between memory, identity, feelings and consciousness; its forms are Dissociative Amnesia (incl. Fugue), Dissociative Identity Disorder, and Depersonalisation/Derealisation Disorder.
  2. Neurodevelopmental disorders share early-developmental onset, behavioural deficits/excesses or delays, and functional impairment; three examples are ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability.

Part (a)

The term dissociation refers to a severance of the connections that normally hold together a person's memory, consciousness, identity and perception of the environment. The individual experiences feelings of unreality, estrangement and depersonalisation, and sometimes a shift or complete loss of personal identity. Dissociation is generally understood as a defensive response to overwhelming stress or trauma.

Its various forms are:

  1. Dissociative Amnesia – a sudden inability to recall important personal information, usually connected with a traumatic or highly stressful experience. The memory loss is too extensive to be explained by normal forgetting and there is no organic cause. When the amnesia is accompanied by Dissociative Fugue the person unexpectedly travels away from home, may assume a new identity, and cannot remember the past.

  2. Dissociative Identity Disorder (earlier called multiple personality disorder) – the person has two or more separate identities or personality states, each with its own memories, ways of thinking and behaviour. These identities alternately take control of the individual, and the transition is usually sudden and stress-linked; the original identity often cannot recall what happened during the others. …
