Part (a)

Mukesh has a persistent irrational thought ('I would not succeed') that is producing his examination anxiety, so the appropriate therapy is a cognitive therapy that targets faulty thinking. Two well-known forms fit:

  • Rational Emotive Therapy (RET), developed by Albert Ellis, is built on the A-B-C model. A is the Antecedent or activating event (the coming entrance exam); B is the person's Belief about it — in Mukesh's case an irrational belief ('I am bound to fail'); and C is the emotional Consequence (intense anxiety). RET teaches that it is the belief, not the event itself, that causes the distress. The therapist helps the client identify the irrational belief, question and dispute it, and replace it with a rational belief, which relieves the anxiety.
  • Aaron Beck's cognitive therapy similarly works by uncovering the client's negative automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions about the self, the world and the future, and helping the client test and correct these distorted thoughts. …
