But sometimes, they go wrong in predictable, systematic ways. When they do, they stop being helpful and start distorting reality.

A cognitive distortion is exactly that: a biased, irrational pattern of thinking that convinces you something is true when it isn't. It's not a random mistake — it's a habitual, automatic way of interpreting events that reinforces negative emotions and unhelpful behaviour.
