Part (a): India's agrarian base shaped its harvest festivals, nature worship, land-linked caste and family structures, cooperative village customs, calendars and cuisine. Part (a)

Indian society is historically rooted in settled agriculture, and the monsoon, the harvest and the cycle of sowing and reaping have shaped much of its culture.

  1. Festivals tied to harvest cycles. Pongal, Makar Sankranti, Baisakhi, Onam and Bihu mark the agricultural seasons — giving thanks for a good yield and following a solar calendar aligned to farming.
  2. Nature and agricultural deities. Worship of Indra (rain), Surya (sun) and Annapurna (food), and rituals like Nag Panchami, reflect a people dependent on land and climate.
  3. Social structure and caste. In many regions caste and power were tied to land: landowning castes dominated village governance and marriage, while landless labourers formed the lower strata — an agrarian hierarchy carried into everyday social life.
  4. Calendars and timekeeping. Traditional lunisolar calendars and panchangs organised sowing, transplanting and harvesting; farmers still consult them for auspicious dates.
  5. Food and cuisine. Regional diets rest on locally grown staples — wheat, rice, millets — and preservation methods (pickling, drying, fermenting) that arose from the need to store the surplus. …
