Part (a)
The Karachi Session of the Indian National Congress in 1931 adopted the historic Resolution on Fundamental Rights and Economic Programme, which for the first time committed the freedom movement to a charter of citizens' rights, several of which directly affirmed women's equality. Its relevant declarations were: that all citizens are equal before the law, irrespective of caste, creed or sex; that every citizen has the freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess and practise religion; that the franchise would be based on universal adult suffrage, meaning women would vote on the same terms as men; that no citizen would suffer any disability in regard to public employment, office, or the exercise of any trade or profession on the ground of sex; and that women would enjoy equality of opportunity. By writing these principles into its programme, the Congress made gender equality a formal commitment of the national movement, anticipating the guarantees later enshrined in the Constitution. …
