Interest on drawings (charged for an average of 6 months) totals ₹6,000; adding it to the net profit of ₹57,000 gives a distributable profit of ₹63,000. Tapti's 1/6 share = ₹10,500, option (C).

Concept and Accounting Treatment

Interest on drawings is an income for the firm — it is credited to the Profit and Loss Appropriation Account and debited to the partners' capital/current accounts. Because it is a gain to the firm, it is added back to the net profit before the profit is distributed among the partners.

The partnership deed charges interest @ 10% p.a., but the dates on which the partners drew the money are not given. In such a case the standard treatment is to charge interest for an average period of 6 months on each partner's total drawings for the year (drawings assumed spread evenly over the year).

Watch out

Charging interest on the full amount for 12 months (giving total interest of ₹12,000 and Tapti's share ₹11,500) is a common mistake. When the rate is "p.a." and no dates are given, interest is for 6 months, not the whole year.
