Part (a): The capital market is broadly participated (including individuals), needs small investment outlay and is riskier, while the money market is mainly institutional, needs large outlay and is comparatively safe.

Part (a)

The financial market is broadly divided into the money market (short-term funds) and the capital market (long-term funds). They can be distinguished on the given bases:

  1. Participants. The money market is largely institutional — its participants are the Reserve Bank of India, commercial banks, non-banking finance companies, large corporate houses, state governments and mutual funds, who deal in short-term surplus funds. The capital market has a much broader participation, including individual retail investors, corporate houses, financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies, and foreign institutional investors.
  2. Investment outlay. In the money market, the instruments are of large denominations, so each transaction requires a large sum of money, which usually keeps small investors out. In the capital market, securities such as shares can be bought in small amounts, so investment is possible even with a relatively small outlay, making it accessible to small savers. …
