The peasants gained refunds and, above all, courage and self-respect; soon the planters left and sharecropping ended.

Before Gandhi's intervention the Champaran peasants were “crushed and fear-stricken,” bound by the unjust 15 per cent indigo arrangement and helpless before the powerful English planters. The episode changed this in two ways.

First, it changed their spirit: the planters were obliged to make refunds and to give up “part of their prestige,” so the peasant “saw that he had rights and defenders” and “learned courage” — their liberation from the fear of the British had begun. Second, it changed their material condition in the longer run: “Within a few years the British planters abandoned their estates, which reverted to the peasants.
