Rent was 15% of land planted with indigo, given up as the harvest; after synthetic indigo appeared the landlords demanded cash compensation, and natural-indigo prices were set to fall.

Under the long-term contract, the Champaran peasants paid their rent in kind: the landlords “compelled all tenants to plant three-twentieths or 15 per cent of their holdings with indigo and surrender the entire indigo harvest as rent.”

Things changed when the landlords learned that Germany had developed synthetic indigo. Natural indigo would now fetch far less, so growing it was no longer profitable for them.
