The spontaneous gathering of thousands of peasants outside the Motihari courthouse when Gandhi was summoned marked the beginning of their liberation from fear of the British and revealed a profound awakening among the rural poor.

When Gandhi reached Champaran in 1917 and began collecting information about the peasants' grievances, his presence quickly alarmed the British authorities. After the commissioner bullied him and advised him to leave, and after a report of a maltreated peasant drew him out towards a nearby village, the police superintendent's messenger overtook him and served him with an official notice to quit Champaran. Gandhi wrote on the receipt that he would disobey, and in consequence he received a summons to appear in court the next day.

The scene outside the courthouse the next morning was extraordinary. The town of Motihari was 'black with peasants'. They did not know Gandhi's record in South Africa; they had merely heard that a Mahatma who wanted to help them was in trouble with the authorities. Their spontaneous demonstration, in thousands, around the courthouse was without any prior organisation or formal plan — a direct, emotional response from people who had found a champion in Gandhi.

This assembly was not orchestrated by any political party or peasant organisation. It was the voice of a populace that had, for the first time, found a leader to rally around.

The British officials, accustomed to a subservient populace, felt powerless without Gandhi's cooperation and were baffled by the crowd. Remarkably, it was Gandhi himself who helped them regulate it — polite and friendly, giving them concrete proof that their might, hitherto dreaded and unquestioned, could be challenged by Indians. The government was so baffled that the prosecutor requested a postponement of the trial.
