Gandhi's simple appearance and his arrival alongside the poor peasant Shukla led the servants to take him for another peasant.

When Shukla led Gandhi to the Patna house of the lawyer Rajendra Prasad, Prasad was out of town. The servants “knew Shukla as a poor yeoman who pestered their master to help the indigo sharecroppers,” so they naturally judged his companion by the company he kept. Gandhi, who dressed plainly and lived like the poor, gave them no reason to think otherwise, and “they took (him) to be another peasant.”

The misjudgement went further: Gandhi “was not permitted to draw water from the well lest some drops from his bucket pollute the entire source,” because the servants could not be sure he was not an untouchable. His humility and simplicity, then, made even servants mistake one of India's greatest leaders for an ordinary poor peasant.

✓Final answer

The servants took Gandhi for another peasant because he arrived with the poor sharecropper Shukla and was himself simply and humbly dressed; knowing Shukla as a poor man, they assumed his equally plain-looking companion was a peasant too.
