Neruda invokes the Earth, which appears dead yet holds hidden life — proof that stillness can conceal, not end, life.

To show that stillness need not mean death, Neruda turns to Nature: "Perhaps the Earth can teach us / as when everything seems dead / and later proves to be alive." The Earth is the symbol he chooses.

The reference is to the natural cycle of the seasons. In winter the ground lies bare and the trees look lifeless, so everything "seems dead"; yet with spring the same earth quietly brings back leaves, flowers and new growth, proving to "be alive" all along.
