The poet looks out of the car to hide her rising tears and to distract herself from the painful realisation of her mother's ageing and mortality.

In the poem My Mother at Sixty-six by Kamala Das, the speaker is driving to the airport with her ageing mother seated beside her. The journey is quiet, intimate, and heavy with unspoken emotion. As she glances at her mother, she is struck by the sight of her dozing — her face pale and wan, like a corpse. This image fills the poet with an old, familiar ache: the fear of losing her mother.

The poet looks out of the car window not out of curiosity or boredom, but as a deliberate act of emotional self-preservation.
