Derry is best described as bitter — his disfigurement has left him angry, withdrawn, and convinced the world sees him only as a monster.

When we first meet Derry in Susan Hill's On the Face of It, he is a fourteen-year-old boy whose face has been burned by acid. That physical scar has carved an even deeper wound into his sense of self. He doesn't stumble into Mr Lamb's garden by accident so much as he retreats there, seeking a place where no one will stare, pity, or recoil. Everything about his manner — the sharp retorts, the refusal to accept kindness, the catalogue of cruel things people have said — points to a boy who has armoured himself in bitterness.

Derry's bitterness shows itself in how he interprets every interaction. He tells Mr Lamb that people are afraid of him, that mothers pull their children away, that he once overheard a woman say his face was "a terrible thing." He has internalised these reactions so completely that he pre-emptively rejects friendship, assuming it must be false. When Mr Lamb offers him an apple or suggests they might be friends, Derry's first instinct is suspicion: why would anyone want to be near him? This isn't confusion about the world — he understands it all too well, or thinks he does. It's a corrosive certainty that he is unlovable, and that certainty has curdled into anger.

He is not defiant in the sense of rebelling against his condition or fighting back with pride. Defiance would mean asserting his worth despite the scar; Derry instead withdraws, convinced his face defines him. Nor is he snobbish — there's no sense of superiority or disdain for others. If anything, he feels beneath them, locked out of ordinary life. And confusion doesn't fit either: Derry knows exactly what he believes about himself and the world, even if those beliefs are distorted by pain. …
