Douglas decided to learn at the Y.M.C.A. pool because it was safe and shallow, whereas the Yakima River was treacherous and his mother had repeatedly warned him against it.

Douglas's mother continually warned him against the river and kept the details of each drowning fresh in his mind, so he grew up regarding it as a place to fear.

The Y.M.C.A. pool was a very different matter. It was considered safe: only two or three feet deep at the shallow end, and although it reached about nine feet at the other end, the drop was gradual rather than sudden.
