In The Third Level by Jack Finney, the real, anxious world of modern New York and the peaceful fantasy of 1894 are so tightly interwoven that neither Charley nor the reader can finally separate them.

The theme 'reality and fantasy are interwoven' is best justified through The Third Level, in which Charley, the narrator, claims to have discovered a mysterious third level at Grand Central Station in New York — even though the station is known to have only two.

  1. The ordinary world is fully real. Charley lives an unremarkable modern life: he collects stamps, visits his psychiatrist friend Sam, and moves through the familiar rush of the city. This grounds the story firmly in reality.

  2. The fantasy opens inside that reality. One night, taking a wrong turn in the station, Charley finds himself on a third level where everything belongs to 1894 — the gaslights, the old-style clothes, the small-town newspaper, the quiet unhurried air. Charley tries to buy a ticket to Galesburg of 1894 but is refused because his modern money is the wrong kind, so he goes back and changes his currency into old bills — a completely practical, real-world action taken in order to reach a fantasy. This overlap is the heart of the interweaving.
