The author's humble job was to cut and file newspaper clippings, yet his own literary ambition eventually linked this insignificant work to Stephen Spender and the wider world of English writing.

Asokamitran's duty at Gemini Studios was to cut out newspaper clippings on a wide variety of subjects and store them in files, many of them written out by hand. It was, by his own account, an 'insignificant function', and because people saw him 'tearing up newspapers day in and day out' they assumed he was doing next to nothing - which is why the office boy would barge in to lecture him. Yet the same job made him 'the most well-informed of all the members of the Gemini family'.

The connection to the wider world came through his private literary ambition, not through the studio. Wanting to enter a short-story contest organised by a British periodical called 'The Encounter', he went to the British Council Library to see the magazine before spending money on postage to England. When he read the editor's name, he 'heard a bell ringing' in his 'shrunken heart' - it was the very poet who had earlier visited Gemini Studios, and he felt he had found a long-lost brother. …
