Asokamitran portrays Gemini Studios through comic exaggeration and steady irony, turning its people and quirks into an eccentric, endearing world.

Much of the humour comes from exaggeration and vivid comic detail. The make-up department is a place of 'fiery misery' where truck-loads of Pancake and other 'potions and lotions' can turn any decent-looking person into a 'hideous crimson hued monster'. The chief make-up man makes the stars ugly, his assistants the lesser players, and the crowd is 'slapped' with paint by the office boy - a man in his early forties still called a 'boy', who nurses grand dreams and bores the narrator with his 'epics' about wasted literary talent.

The irony works mainly through contrast between appearance and reality. Make-up meant to beautify actually makes people monstrous. The author teasingly presents the mixed-region make-up team as proof of 'national integration long before A.I.R. and Doordarshan began broadcasting programmes on national integration'. The Story Department's legal adviser is called 'the opposite', a man of cold logic among dreamers whose quiet recording trick unwittingly ends an actress's career - and when the department is shut, Asokamitran notes it was 'perhaps the only instance in all human history where a lawyer lost his job because the poets were asked to go home'. …
