The office boy's story is both comic and pathetic: a middle-aged man clings to blighted dreams of stardom and, unable to accept failure, blames Subbu - and the author treats this ambition and failure with gentle, pitying irony.

The comedy lies in the gap between the man's grand self-image and his actual place. Though called the 'office boy', he is in his early forties, and he had joined the studios years earlier hoping to become a star actor, a top screen-writer, director or lyrics writer. Instead he sits at the very bottom of the make-up hierarchy, mixing paint in a giant vessel and slapping it on the crowd players. Yet he still fancies himself a poet and a wronged genius, barging into the narrator's cubicle to deliver long-winded 'epics' on how great literary talent is being wasted in a department 'fit only for barbers and perverts'. His pomposity, so out of proportion to his lot, is genuinely funny. …
