Part (a): Bt cotton carries a Bacillus thuringiensis cry gene, so it makes a protoxin that turns into an active gut toxin in the bollworm and kills it.

The cotton bollworm is a serious pest that feeds on the leaves and bolls of cotton. Ordinary cotton has no in-built protection, so the bollworm feeds and multiplies on it freely.

Bt cotton is a genetically modified (transgenic) plant: scientists have inserted into it a cry gene obtained from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis.
