Question

Q.(a) Draw a diagram of a fully developed embryo sac of an angiosperm. Label its chalazal end and any other five parts within the embryo sac.

(b) Why does the development of an endosperm precede that of the embryo in angiosperm ?
(c) Number of chromosomes in an onion plant cell is 16. Name the cells of the embryo sac having 16 and 24 chromosomes formed after fertilisation.

Part (a): the 7-celled, 8-nucleate embryo sac has antipodals (chalazal), a central cell with two polar nuclei, and an egg with two synergids (micropylar); the endosperm forms before the embryo to nourish it; in onion the zygote has 16 and the primary endosperm nucleus 24 chromosomes.

Part (b): after fertilisation the zygote undergoes cleavage → morula → blastocyst, which then implants in the uterine endometrium.

Part (a)

The fully developed, 7-celled embryo sac: the chalazal end with three antipodal cells, a central cell with two polar nuclei, and the micropylar egg apparatus of one egg cell flanked by two synergids with the filiform apparatus.
The fully developed, 7-celled embryo sac: the chalazal end with three antipodal cells, a central cell with two polar nuclei, and the micropylar egg apparatus of one egg cell flanked by two synergids with the filiform apparatus.

(a) Fully developed embryo sac. The mature female gametophyte is 7-celled and 8-nucleate. Draw it as an oval with:

  • the chalazal end (opposite the micropyle) bearing three antipodal cells;
  • a large central central cell containing two polar nuclei;
  • at the micropylar end, the egg apparatus of one egg cell flanked by two synergids (which bear the filiform apparatus). Label the chalazal end and any five of these parts.

(b) Why endosperm development precedes that of the embryo. In double fertilisation, one male gamete fuses with the egg to give the diploid zygote, and the second fuses with the two polar nuclei to give the triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN). The PEN begins dividing immediately, forming the endosperm — the nutritive tissue of the seed — whereas the zygote remains dormant for a while. The endosperm is formed first so that a ready store of nourishment is already in place to feed the growing embryo once the zygote starts to divide and differentiate.

(c) Chromosome numbers in onion after fertilisation. In onion the somatic (diploid) number is 2n = 16, so the gametic (haploid) number is n = 8.

  • A cell with 16 chromosomes is the zygote, formed by fusion of the egg cell (n=8) and one male gamete (n=8), i.e. 2n = 16. …
