Question

Q.Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. Prevention is the frontline response to drug use. Effective interventions address the underlying conditions contributing to drug use, such as a lack of connection to family or community, instability, insecurity, trauma, mental health issues, etc. When addressed, these factors can effectively prevent the initiation of drug use and the progression to drug use disorders. Study the few key figures of drug use given below and answer the questions that follow. [Infographic — People who use drugs 2022: 292 million people; 20% over 10 years; 3% (over 5 years 2018 – 2022). People with drug use disorders, 2022 (in millions). Table No. 1: 1 in 11 in treatment; 1 in 18 (among women in treatment); 1 in 7 (among men in treatment); (p) and (q) figures. Table No. 2: 13·9 million people who inject drugs; 1·6 million living with HIV; 1·4 million living with HIV & Hepatitis C]

(a) What do you infer from the figures in Table No. 1 about the people with drug use disorders, 2022 (in million) ? State any two of your observations.
(b) How are Hepatitis C and HIV related to drug use disorders by people, as shown in Table No. 2 ? State the correlation between the two.
(c)
(i) Give the scientific name of (p) shown in Table No. 1.
(OR)
(c)
(ii) Give the scientific name of (q) shown in Table No. 1.

Part (a): Table 1 reveals a large treatment gap (~1 in 11) and a gender disparity (women 1 in 18 vs men 1 in 7); Table 2 shows injecting drug use is strongly correlated with HIV and HIV–Hepatitis-C co-infection via needle-sharing; the identity of (p) depends on the missing figure legend.

Part (c): the identity of (q) likewise depends on the figure legend not supplied.

The passage frames prevention as the frontline response to drug use and presents 2022 figures — 292 million users (up 20 % over a decade) — with two data tables.

Part (a)

(a) Observations from Table No. 1. The table concerns people with drug-use disorders and their access to treatment:

  1. A very large treatment gap: only about 1 in 11 affected people is receiving treatment, so nearly 90 % go untreated — reflecting stigma, low awareness and weak healthcare access.
  2. A marked gender disparity: among those in treatment the ratio is 1 in 7 for men but only 1 in 18 for women, showing women face much greater barriers (stigma, caregiving roles, lack of women-friendly services).

(b) Hepatitis-C, HIV and injecting drug use (Table No. 2). Of 13.9 million people who inject drugs, 1.6 million live with HIV and 1.4 million live with both HIV and Hepatitis-C. Because both are blood-borne viruses transmitted through shared, contaminated needles and syringes, injecting drug use directly raises the risk of each and of co-infection. The correlation is therefore positive and strong — the more injecting drug use, the greater the burden of HIV and Hepatitis-C — which is why harm-reduction measures (needle-exchange, sterile equipment) are stressed. …
