Ray diagram for a concave mirror with the object between pole P and focus F, giving a virtual, erect and magnified image behind the mirror.
Ray diagram for a concave mirror with the object between pole P and focus F, giving a virtual, erect and magnified image behind the mirror.

Object inside the focus of a concave mirror gives a virtual, erect, magnified image; similar triangles give 1v+1u=1f\tfrac1v+\tfrac1u=\tfrac1f and m=−v/um=-v/u.

  1. Ray diagram. Place the object between the pole P and focus F. Draw two rays from the top of the object: (1) parallel to the principal axis, reflected through F; (2) directed toward the centre of curvature C, reflected back along itself. The reflected rays diverge; produced backward they meet behind the mirror, forming a virtual, erect, magnified image.
  2. Mirror formula (similar triangles). Using the object distance uu, image distance vv, focal length ff (with the mirror sign convention, distances measured from P, real-is-negative). From similar triangles formed by the incident/reflected rays and the axis, A′B′AB=vuandA′B′AB=f−vf (or equivalent),\frac{A'B'}{AB}=\frac{v}{u}\quad\text{and}\quad\frac{A'B'}{AB}=\frac{f-v}{f}\ (\text{or equivalent}), …
