- Clear title, table number and unit. Every table needs a brief, self-explanatory title, an identifying number, and a head-note stating the unit of measurement.
- Appropriate size. The table should be neither too large nor too small — it must fit the data without overcrowding; if there is too much data, split it into two or more tables.
- Logical arrangement. Rows and columns should be arranged logically — by size, time, geography or alphabetically — and items to be compared should be placed close together (side by side) so comparison is easy.
- Totals and sub-totals. Row and column totals (and useful sub-totals) should be shown.
- Units clearly stated. The unit of measurement must be clear for every figure.
