- Rigidly defined — it should have a single, clear and unambiguous definition and formula, giving the same value for everyone who computes it.
- Simple to understand and easy to calculate — usable by ordinary persons without heavy computation.
- Based on all the observations — every item of the series should contribute, so the measure truly represents the spread of the whole data.
- Capable of further algebraic/mathematical treatment — e.g. combined dispersion of several groups can be worked out.
- Least affected by sampling fluctuations — different samples from the same population should give nearly the same value, i.e. it should be stable.
