DIN is a unique lifetime 8-digit number allotted by the Central Government/MCA to a person intending to be a director; one person can have only one DIN, obtained through a prescribed application, and it must be quoted in all documents signed as director.

Director Identification Number (DIN):

  • Meaning: DIN is a unique identification number allotted to an individual who is or intends to become a director of a company. It is an 8-digit number.
  • Allotting authority: it is allotted by the Central Government through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).
  • Application: a person applies in the prescribed electronic form (e.g. DIR-3), with identity and address proof and a photograph; on verification the DIN is allotted.
  • Uniqueness: a person can hold only one DIN for his whole life, however many companies he is a director of; obtaining or using more than one DIN is an offence.
