Figure — The stem is a hard 'Draw labelled diagram of T.S. of dicot root' instruction and the canonical NCERT figure 6.

A transverse section of a dicot root shows, from the outside in: epiblema (with root hairs), cortex, endodermis (with Casparian strips), pericycle, radial vascular bundles (usually tetrarch), and a small or absent pith.

Since this text-based format cannot render an actual drawing, here is the complete labelled structure a student should draw and annotate, region by region, from the outermost layer inward:

  1. Epiblema (epidermis/piliferous layer) — the outermost single layer of thin-walled cells, some of which extend outward as unicellular root hairs for water/mineral absorption. No cuticle is present (unlike stems), so absorption is efficient.
  2. Cortex — several layers of thin-walled, loosely arranged parenchymatous cells with prominent intercellular spaces, used for storage and radial transport of water.
  3. Endodermis — the innermost layer of the cortex, a single layer of barrel-shaped cells without intercellular spaces; their radial and transverse walls bear a band of suberin deposition called the Casparian strip, which forces water to pass through the cell (symplastic route) rather than between cells.
  4. Pericycle — a single layer of thin-walled parenchymatous cells just inside the endodermis; it is the site of origin of lateral roots. …
