Transverse waves have particle oscillation perpendicular to the direction of propagation (crests and troughs); longitudinal waves have particle oscillation parallel to the direction of propagation (compressions and rarefactions).

Transverse waves:

  • Particles of the medium oscillate perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels.
  • Characterized by alternating crests (points of maximum positive displacement) and troughs (points of maximum negative displacement).
  • Can travel through solids and along the surface of liquids, and (as electromagnetic waves) through vacuum; generally cannot propagate through the bulk of a fluid, since fluids cannot sustain shear stress.
  • Examples: waves on a stretched string, electromagnetic waves (light).

Longitudinal waves:

  • Particles of the medium oscillate parallel to (along) the direction in which the wave travels.
  • Characterized by alternating compressions (regions of higher density/pressure) and rarefactions (regions of lower density/pressure). …
