A longitudinal wave has particle vibration along the direction of travel (compressions/rarefactions); a transverse wave has particle vibration perpendicular to the direction of travel (crests/troughs).

Longitudinal wave:

  • The particles of the medium oscillate back and forth along the SAME direction in which the wave travels.
  • This creates alternating regions of compression (particles crowded together) and rarefaction (particles spread apart) along the direction of propagation.
  • Can travel through solids, liquids, and gases, since it only requires the medium to be compressible.
  • Example: sound waves in air.

Transverse wave:

  • The particles of the medium oscillate perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels.
  • This creates alternating crests (upward displacement) and troughs (downward displacement). …
