Transverse waves have particle vibration perpendicular to wave travel (crests/troughs); longitudinal waves have particle vibration parallel to wave travel (compressions/rarefactions).

Transverse Wave Motion:

In a transverse wave, each particle of the medium oscillates up and down (or side to side) about its mean position, in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the wave itself travels. This produces alternating regions of maximum positive displacement (crests) and maximum negative displacement (troughs). Examples: waves produced on a stretched string, electromagnetic waves (light).

Longitudinal Wave Motion:

In a longitudinal wave, each particle of the medium oscillates back and forth about its mean position along the SAME direction in which the wave travels. This creates alternating regions where the medium is compressed together (compressions, where density/pressure is higher) and regions where it is spread apart (rarefactions, where density/pressure is lower). Example: sound waves travelling through air.
