The key distinction is direction of oscillation relative to propagation: transverse waves oscillate perpendicular to travel direction; longitudinal waves oscillate parallel to it, creating compressions and rarefactions.

Transverse wave motion: the particles of the medium vibrate in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels. The wave consists of alternating crests (regions of maximum positive displacement) and troughs (regions of maximum negative displacement). Transverse waves can travel through solids and along the surface of liquids, and through vacuum in the case of electromagnetic waves, but not through the bulk of a fluid, since fluids do not support shear. Example: waves on a stretched string, electromagnetic waves.
