In a transverse wave, particle oscillation is perpendicular to the wave's direction of travel.

When a wave travels through a medium, individual particles of the medium do not travel along with the wave; they only oscillate about their mean (equilibrium) position. Based on the relationship between this oscillation direction and the wave's propagation direction, waves are classified as transverse or longitudinal.

In transverse wave motion, each particle of the medium vibrates perpendicular to the direction in which the wave itself propagates. As the wave moves forward (say along the x-axis), the particles move up and down (along the y-axis), creating alternate crests (regions of maximum positive displacement) and troughs (regions of maximum negative displacement).
