In a transverse wave, particle oscillation is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels -- e.g. a wave on a string, water-surface ripples, and light.

A transverse wave is a wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate (oscillate) in a direction perpendicular (at right angles) to the direction in which the wave itself travels. As the wave moves forward, the medium's particles move up and down (or side to side), not along the direction of propagation, creating alternating crests (regions of maximum positive displacement) and troughs (regions of maximum negative displacement).

Transverse waves can travel through solids and along the surface of liquids, but generally cannot propagate through the bulk of a fluid (liquids/gases), since fluids do not support a shearing/restoring force needed to sustain transverse oscillations in their interior.

Examples of transverse waves:

  • Waves produced on a stretched string or rope when one end is shaken up and down.
  • Ripples/waves on the surface of water. …
