Transgenic animals help in studying physiology, modelling diseases, making biological products, testing vaccine safety, and chemical safety testing.

Concept: A transgenic animal is one whose DNA has been altered to carry an extra (foreign) gene. Such animals (mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, cows, fish) are created for several benefits.

Five benefits of transgenic animals:

[!NOTE]

  1. Normal physiology and development: they are used to study how genes are regulated and how they affect the normal functions and development of the body (e.g. by adding genes or altering them).
  2. Study of disease: they serve as models for human diseases so that scientists can understand the disease and develop new treatments. Models exist for cancer, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.
  3. Biological products (medicines): they can be engineered to produce useful biological products. For example, Rosie, the first transgenic cow, produced human-protein-enriched milk (human alpha-lactalbumin); transgenic animals are also used to make human protein alpha-1-antitrypsin (for emphysema). …
