Transgenic animals (carrying a manipulated/foreign gene) benefit humans through: (1) study of physiology & disease, (2) production of biological/pharmaceutical products, (3) vaccine safety testing, and (4) chemical safety (toxicity) testing.

Concept. Animals whose DNA has been manipulated to possess and express an extra (foreign) gene are called transgenic animals. Transgenic rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, cows, fish and mice have been produced (>95% are mice). They benefit humans in several ways:

  1. Study of normal physiology and development: transgenic animals are designed to study how genes are regulated and how they affect normal body functions and development (e.g. the study of complex factors such as insulin-like growth factor).
  2. Study of diseases (disease models): many transgenic animals are made to serve as models for human diseases — helping us understand and find treatments for cancer, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.
  3. Production of biological products (biological pharming): useful human proteins can be produced by transgenic animals. Example — the transgenic cow Rosie produced human-protein-enriched milk (2.4 g of human α-lactalbumin per litre), a more balanced, nutritionally complete food for human babies. …
