Bt cotton is made by inserting cry (Bt toxin) genes from Bacillus thuringiensis into cotton; the plant makes an inactive protoxin that becomes an active toxin in the insect's alkaline gut, killing the pest.

Development of Bt cotton:

  1. Source of the gene – Bt toxin genes are isolated from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). This bacterium forms protein crystals during a particular phase of its growth; these crystals contain a toxic insecticidal protein.

  2. Why the toxin does not kill the bacterium – The Bt toxin protein exists as inactive protoxins (crystals), so it does not harm the bacterium itself.

  3. Activation of the toxin in the insect – When an insect ingests the inactive protoxin, it is converted into an active form of the toxin due to the alkaline pH of the insect's gut, which solubilises the crystals.

  4. Mode of action – The activated toxin binds to the surface of the midgut epithelial cells of the insect and creates pores in the cell membrane. This causes cell swelling and lysis, and eventually the death of the insect.

  5. The cry genes – Specific Bt toxin genes are called cry genes. Different cry proteins act against different insects, e.g.:

    • cryIAc and cryIIAb proteins control the cotton bollworms.
    • cryIAb controls the corn borer. …
