Ecological pyramids ignore food webs, cannot place a species at multiple trophic levels, and leave out decomposers.

Concept: Ecological pyramids (of number, biomass, energy) represent the relationship between trophic levels. However, they are simplifications and have several limitations.

Three limitations:

[!NOTE]

  1. They assume simple food chains: pyramids depict straight-line food chains, but such simple chains rarely exist in nature — real ecosystems have complex food webs which pyramids cannot represent.
